70 year old can’t find the right pickleball paddle

By Rose Gifford

As I stood in front of the colorful display of pickleball paddles, I couldn’t help but feel a mixture of excitement and bewilderment. My 70th birthday was just around the corner, and my children had encouraged me to pick up a new hobby to stay active and social. They had sung the praises of pickleball, a sport that was gaining popularity among people of all ages, especially seniors like myself. Eager to embrace this new adventure, I ventured out to the local sports store, armed with a mission to find the perfect pickleball paddle. Little did I know how challenging this seemingly simple task would be.

My children had warned me that selecting the right paddle was essential for enjoying the game and preventing injuries. However, they hadn’t prepared me for the dizzying array of options that awaited me. Graphite, composite, wooden – the list of materials and designs seemed endless. I longed for the days when choices were more straightforward, and I didn’t need a degree in sports science to make an informed decision.

Feeling somewhat overwhelmed, I decided to seek help. A friendly sales associate named Sarah approached me, her youthful energy a stark contrast to my own. I explained my situation, and she assured me that she would guide me through the process of finding the perfect paddle.

“Since you’re new to the game and a senior player, we should focus on finding a paddle that offers good control and is lightweight,” Sarah advised. “A lighter paddle will be easier on your arm and wrist, which can help prevent strain or injury.”

Her words resonated with me, as I had no intention of picking up a sport only to end up with aching joints or a nagging injury. We began examining the available options, and Sarah guided me through the pros and cons of each material. Graphite paddles were lightweight and offered excellent control, while composite paddles provided a balance of power and maneuverability. Wooden paddles were the most affordable but were generally heavier and offered less control.

As I held various paddles, testing their weight and grip, Sarah continued to educate me on the importance of finding the right fit. She explained that the paddle’s weight and grip size would significantly impact my playing experience. I needed to find a paddle that felt comfortable in my hand and didn’t strain my wrist or arm.

After trying out several paddles, I found myself drawn to a lightweight graphite paddle with a small grip. It felt comfortable and easy to maneuver, but I couldn’t help but worry that I was sacrificing power for comfort.

Sarah seemed to read my mind, as she quickly assured me, “Don’t worry, as a beginner, it’s more important to focus on control and proper technique. Once you become more experienced and confident in your skills, you can always upgrade to a different paddle if you feel the need for more power.”

Her reassurance helped put my mind at ease. We continued to explore other factors, such as the paddle’s sweet spot – the area on the paddle face that produced the most optimal contact with the ball. I learned that finding a paddle with a generous sweet spot would make it easier for me to hit the ball consistently and improve my overall gameplay.

After much deliberation, I finally settled on a lightweight graphite paddle with a small grip and a large sweet spot. It seemed like the perfect fit for my needs, and I felt a sense of accomplishment in making an informed decision.

With my new pickleball paddle in hand, I couldn’t wait to try it out on the court. I signed up for a local senior pickleball clinic, where I would learn the basics of the game and meet other players my age. As I stepped onto the court for the first time, I felt a combination of nerves and excitement. I was embarking on a new chapter

in my life, one filled with the promise of fun, friendship, and personal growth.

Over the next few weeks, I immersed myself in the world of pickleball. Under the guidance of our patient and experienced instructors, my fellow seniors and I learned the rules of the game, practiced our serves, and honed our skills on the court. With each passing day, my confidence grew, and I began to appreciate the wisdom of choosing a lightweight paddle that offered excellent control.

As I progressed, I found myself making new friends and building a sense of camaraderie with my fellow players. We shared stories, offered each other encouragement, and even exchanged tips on how to improve our game. The pickleball court had become more than just a place to exercise; it was a vibrant community that embraced players of all ages and skill levels.

As the weeks turned into months, my love for pickleball continued to flourish. I found myself eagerly anticipating each practice session and looking forward to the friendly competition and social interaction. My new paddle had proven to be a wise investment, and I couldn’t imagine playing without it.

One day, after a particularly exhilarating game, I paused to catch my breath and take in the scene around me. I watched as my fellow seniors engaged in friendly banter, their faces flushed with the joy of physical activity and companionship. It dawned on me that the process of selecting the right pickleball paddle, as daunting as it had seemed initially, had ultimately led me to a richer, more fulfilling life.

In the end, the effort I had put into finding the perfect paddle had paid off in more ways than I could have imagined. Not only had it allowed me to enjoy the game without unnecessary strain or discomfort, but it had also opened the door to a world of friendship, laughter, and personal growth. As I stood there, surrounded by my new friends and clutching my trusty paddle, I felt an immense sense of gratitude for the journey that had brought me to this point.

With each passing day, I grew more convinced that age was just a number and that it was never too late to embrace new experiences and challenges. The world of pickleball had taught me that life still had much to offer, even as I entered my seventh decade. And as I looked forward to many more years of fun and camaraderie on the pickleball court, I knew that my trusty paddle would always be by my side, ready to guide me through this wonderful new chapter in my life.
