According to analysts, pickleball, one of the country’s fastest-growing sports, may come with a significant financial burden for Americans. UBS Analysts have estimated that medical costs directly related to pickleball could range from $250 million to $500 million. The report highlights that approximately 80% of these costs are associated with outpatient care, with a significant portion being covered by Medicare.
The analysis refers to a 2021 study that specifically examined injuries related to pickleball and tennis. The study found that pickleball injuries typically involve strains, sprains, or fractures and often affect the wrist, lower leg, head, or lower trunk. Interestingly, the study revealed that individuals aged 60 and above accounted for 86% of emergency room visits related to pickleball injuries.
It is important to consider these findings as they shed light on the potential financial and healthcare implications associated with the increasing popularity of pickleball in the United States.
